CIRCLE TRAP

The circle trap is designed to capture spotted lanternfly nymphs as they crawl up the trunk to feed on the tree by funneling them into a plastic container (1).

It is made from fine mesh that wraps around a tree and has a wood and wireframe that holds part of the mesh away from the trunk.

INSTRUCTIONS:

- Install the trap 3-5 ft above ground on a tree of heaven with a diameter of 5 “ or greater.

- Make sure the side of the trap with the large wooden stick lies flush against the tree.

- Secure the mesh at the bottom tight against the bark using staples or string.

- Adjust the wire rim so the top is 3-4” away from the trunk.

- Label the trap with your name, date, and number (if you have more than one).

- Carefully examine the trap every two weeks for spotted lanternflies.

- A magnifying glass may be needed to see the young nymphal stage.

- Enter the data into the ArcGIS Survey123 app, including any negative finds.

- If spotted lanternflies are detected, contact the Insect ID Lab at Virginia Tech for confirmation.

* In order to protect the critically endangered Rusty Patched Bumble Bee, we were not allowed to use sticky tree bands because other insects are more likely to get caught in them.
