TRAINING

 Stop SLF

June 23, 2021

Today, I went to the Rockingham County, Virginia Cooperative Extension office to do training for the Citizen Scientist Detection Program for Spotted Lanternfly.

Our instructor explained the serious threats posed by the spotted lanternfly to the agricultural industry, particularly to vineyards.

Due to the invasive pest’s association with the tree of heaven, he indicated that the likelihood of it spreading throughout the state was high.

We went over the life cycle of the spotted lanternfly and looked at specimens for identification purposes.

Then, Jason explained how to set up the circle traps

He instructed us to use the ArcGIS Survey123 app to log observations.

We were each given a trap to take home and told to place them on a large tree of heaven, close to a transportation network if possible.

In addition to the in-person training, I watched the training videos online.
